Consensus

The process by which nodes in a distributed network come to a common agreement about the operation of the network. Consensus can be performed over any electronic communications network.

In the context of a distributed ledger the consensus algorithm, sometimes called the consensus mechanism or consensus protocol, is the means by which nodes agree what data is valid. By extension, this process also governs the rules of the network.
